Having already explored the core components of the teaching model in previous workshops, this is the sixth workshop exploring the outer satellites of the teaching model. This component workshop for singers and singing teachers, based on the Classical Voice Training teaching model focuses on the outer satellite of Resonance further through the lens of practical vocal acoustic and vowel migration and leads to an advanced understanding of acoustic registration and its practical application. Our modern understanding of voice acoustics has shown us that registration events can be either laryngeal or acoustic and we need to understand the difference to be able to solve registration issues effectively. We will explore different primal acoustic strategies including ‘yell timbre’, ‘whoop timbre’, ‘close timbre’ and ‘open timbre’ and how to integrate these conception through simple practical exercises into our singing and teaching. Resonance and optimizing it allows a classical singer without straining to be heard over a large orchestra, this happens when we learn to ‘tune’ our vocal tract. This workshop will focus on how to use acoustic registration to build the singers resonance through developing: squillo or epi-laryngeal narrowing, singers formant cluster, larynx height and ‘collar connection’, an open throat, pharyngeal tuning and resonance strategies for different voice types. We will explore how vowels effect acoustic registration and how acoustic registration effects how vowels migrate across the range to maintain an open throat and optimize resonance. We’ll look at the most comfortable and efficient configuration of the vocal tract for acoustic registration across pitch range and give you simple practical exercises to start using these concepts straight away to improve your teaching and singing.

About this Acoustic Registration Component Workshop

This Acoustic Registration Component Workshop will focus in on the outer satellites of the Classical Voice Training Teaching Model: resonance and articulation. Through practical application, this model gives the singer and teacher the skills they need to develop their classical singing technique. We have designed this workshop specifically for singers and singing teachers.

We will explore acoustic registration through the lens of practical vocal acoustics and vowel migration across range in this workshop. Let’s explore, through evidence-based research and practical exercises, how singers and teachers can use the deep connections between the emotional motor system and resonance in singing. We will investigate primal sounds as triggers for emotional vocalisation and how they can recruit efficient resonance strategies across the range. We’ll explore different acoustic registrations including; ‘open timbre’, ‘close timbre’, ‘yell timbre’ and ‘whoop or hoot timbre’. We’ll also learn how to assess resonance, acoustic registration and vowels, and how to set up the vocal tract for efficient voice production across pitch range and for different timbres of voice. We’ll look at how to achieve chiaroscuro across the range – a sound that has the perfect balance of darkness and brightness in it, which forms the core of the classical vocal sound. We will also learn how to use resonance efficiently in your teaching and singing and explore concepts like ‘passaggio‘ and ‘cover‘, and explore the differences between male and female range training. This advanced course is packed full of practical exercises and techniques, giving both singers and teachers powerful tools for their own practice.

Taught by Opera Singer and Vocal Craft and Classical Voice Training Director James Platt and Professor Janice Chapman, author of the acclaimed textbook Singing and Teaching Singing: A Holistic Approach to Classical Voice, this workshop is the second of a complete series of in-depth explorations of the full SATS Model.
