10am – 12 noon – Morning Session
2pm – 4pm Afternoon Session

Having already explored the core components of the teaching model in previous workshops, this is the third workshop exploring the outer satellites of the teaching model. This component workshop for singers and singing teachers, based on the Classical Voice Training teaching model focuses on the outer satellites of Articulation. Articulation looks at the how we modify the vocal tract for consonants, vowels and vocal timbre. We will explore the differences between speech and singing articulation, and how to optimize articulation for singing. We will also look at the individual components of the articulatory system including the vocal folds, velum or soft palate, tongue, teeth/alveolus, jaw and lips.

We’ll also explore the most common articulation problems in singing including; tongue root tension, tongue blade articulation and the tongue, jaw and larynx functioning together as a unit. This course will give you simple practical exercises to understand and gain efficient control over your articulatory structures, start using these techniques straight away to improve your singing and teaching.

About this Articulation Component Workshop

This ‘Articulation Component Workshop’ will focus in on the outer satellites of the Classical Voice Training Teaching Model: phonation, resonance, and articulation. Through practical application, this model gives the singer and teacher the skills they need to develop their classical singing technique. We have designed this workshop specifically for singers and singing teachers.

Articulation is the focus for this workshop. Let’s explore, through evidence-based research and practical exercises, how singers and teachers can use the deep connections between the emotional motor system and articulation in singing. We will investigate primal sounds as triggers for emotional vocalisation and how they recruit the articulatory appropriately. We’ll also learn how to assess and manage articulation across the range, and how to use articulation to set up the most efficient resonance for singing. This course is packed full of practical exercises and techniques, giving both singers and teachers powerful tools for their own practice.

Taught Opera Singer and Vocal Craft and Classical Voice Training Director James Platt and Professor Janice Chapman, author of the acclaimed textbook Singing and Teaching Singing: A Holistic Approach to Classical Voice, this workshop is the second of a complete series of in-depth explorations of the full SATS Model.
