James has been a professional soloist, teaching of singing, pedagogy lecturer and course leader for over 15 years. When it comes to understanding how the voice functions, few people have had the breadth of experience in both teaching and performing. His varied career as singer, teacher, lecturer, choir trainer and conductor gives him a unique skillset enabling him to help you achieve your technical and artistic goals.
James’ clients include professional singers, voice teachers, choristers, and professional singers/performers with complex voice problems.
James is also happy to work with professionals, students, and committed amateurs (who are committed to putting in the time and effort to achieving their goals).
James lectures in voice pedagogy and has led courses at some of the nations leading arts institutions, including; Chethams School of Music, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, the Royal Northern College of Music. He is the principal lecturer of the voice pedagogy course at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and the vocal consultant for the Mascarade Opera Studio in Florence, where he works regularly helping to develop the vocal and artistic skillset required for these emerging professional artists.
He has led many accredited Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses and workshops for singers, singing teachers and voice professionals through his company Classical Voice Training Ltd.
As an author, James co-authored the Classical Voice Training Workbook, which is available on Classical Voice Training courses and to his stands. He is also a contributing author and assistant editor of the fourth edition of Janice Chapman’s bestselling book Singing and Singing Teaching: A holistic approach to Classical Voice. James’ clients often prefer a practical but science informed approach to voice, which is constantly being updated as the fields of voice science and pedagogy continue to grow.
James runs live studios in London, often at the Royal Opera House or Marylebone Studios, and at his home in Olney, Buckinghamshire. He also works regularly at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, and can offer sessions in Birmingham subject to availability.
Due to the international nature of James career and similarly the careers of many of his clients, he finds many people prefer to work online.
